Did you ever do improv performances as prep for the monologue shows you have clearly mastered? I am primarily a writer but I also want to perform more; improv was a blast in a class but it was less fu
I started with stand up. My philosophy is if you think you want to give it a try, go for it! Write some jokes and find an open mic. I don't think you need improv as a stepping stone.
I would also recommend reading Franklin Ajaye's book Comic Insights. It's a great resource for comics at all stages.
